Planned Giving

“I wish I could do more.”

That’s the comment we often hear from friends of St. Benedict’s Abbey, when they make gifts to assist in our programs.

What if it were possible to make a gift of “startling significance,” the kind of contribution many friends of St. Benedict’s Abbey would like to make, if there were just some way to do it? We’re talking about gifts that truly make a difference, that ensure a level of support that magnifies our ability to fulfill our mission . . . and multiplies your personal satisfaction and recognition.

Strange as it may sound, a gift of “startling significance” often can be made at very low cost. It’s just a matter of planning WHAT to give, HOW to give and WHEN to give. The information on these pages illustrates many ways of making a “planned gift,” and our staff can be of even more help. Just call or e-mail our office.

Wills and Trusts

A bequest from your will or trust to the Benedictine Monks is a powerful expression of your desire to help our monks continue their ministries of prayer and service to the Church.

Your bequest is private and known only to you, your attorney, and the people you choose to inform of your plans.

It’s also very easy.

Here are some samples you can share with your lawyer or estate planner to remember the Benedictines in your Will or Trust:

I give and bequeath to Benedictine Monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey, a Wisconsin non-profit corporation headquartered at 12605 224th Ave., Benet Lake, WI 53102…

I wish to give a percentage of my estate:

______ percent of my estate to be used for its general purposes.

I wish to make a bequest of a specific amount:

the sum of ______ to be used for its general purposes.

I wish to give a residual amount or remaining interest:

the rest, residue and remainder of my estate after all debts, expenses and taxes have been paid and all the general and specific bequests have been made, to be used by Benedictine Monks, Inc., a nonprofit located at 12605 224th Ave, Benet Lake, WI, for its general purposes.

I wish to give a tangible asset or property:

_______ shares of common stock of __________ (or insert here a description of other property) owned by me at my death as these shares shall exist at the date of my death, to be used by Benedictine Monks, Inc., a nonprofit located at 12605 224th Ave, Benet Lake, WI, for its general purposes. for its general purposes.

Beneficiary Designations (Insurance, IRA, Retirement)

You can also help the monks by naming us as a full or partial beneficiary to your savings account, investment/brokerage accounts, IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or other qualified retirement plans, or insurance policy. This is a simple way to make a gift that has a lasting effect on the lives of our monks and seminarians.

Doing so it simple and straightforward:

  • Request a beneficiary designation form from your plan administrator, insurance provider, or financial institution.
  • Complete and return the form to your provider.

Designating a beneficiary does not change your ability to control your retirement account or life insurance policy.

  • For retirement plans, you can continue to make withdrawals throughout your lifetime.  You can also change the beneficiary at any time if family circumstances change.
  • For insurance plans, you continue to make payments throughout your lifetime, and your beneficiaries only receive funds at the end of your life.  You may name more than one beneficiary to ensure your family is cared for as well as fulfilling your philanthropic goals.

If you are considering making a change to your retirement plan, please discuss the change with your professional advisors and your plan administrator.

Charitable Gift Annuities

Charitable gift annuities are an excellent way for those who want to support us to satisfy their goals of financial security and benefit the work of the monks. The Benedictine Monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey offers a charitable gift annuity program through their mother-house, Conception Abbey in Conception, Mo. To learn more about gift annuities visit their website at https://legacy.conceptionabbey.org/giving-options/charitable-gift-annuities or call their planned giving office at (660) 944-2825.

Gift of Securities

Donations of appreciated securities or mutual funds help the Benedictines continue their work of prayer and service to the Church while offing great benefits to you, the donor.

  • You are eligible for a charitable income tax deduction on the fair market value of the securities on the date of transfer
  • You would pay no capital gains tax on securities you donate that you’ve held for more than one year
  • Donating securities can help you rebalance your portfolio

Donations of securities can be done in many forms, so we’ve gathered some simple guidance in our Donation of Securities Form.

Charitable IRA Rollover

IRA owners ages 70 ½ and older can now make direct gifts from their distributions directly to the Benedictine Monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey.
